Australia Visa

If you have got plans to travel to Australia and do not hold Australian or New Zealand passport, then you must apply for a valid visa to enter the Australian territory. If you are a citizen of New Zealand, then you can apply for the visa upon arrival at the NZ airport. Rest all the passport holders must apply for a visa before flying to Australia. Travelers to Australia can apply for a visa depending on the purpose of his/her visit to the nation. Visa can easily be applied by visiting the nearest Australian Consulate. There are certain types of visas which can be applied online by sitting at home.

Australia Embassies

Tourist Visa

Travelers visiting Australia for a holiday, social, sightseeing, short-term non-work purposes, etc. must apply for a tourist visa prior to his/her travel date. Tourist visa is further divided into different categories, depending on different criteria of visits of travelers to the nation. You may visit the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship website for in detailed eligibility requirements.

ETA (Visitor) (Subclass 976)

ETA or Electronic Travel Authority is attached to the traveler's passport electronically. It is given to travelers living outside Australia and are willing to visit the nation for short-term stay of up to three months.

eVisitors (Subclass 651)

e Visitors (Subclass 651) visas are is sued to those travelers who are descending to Australia for tourism and business purposes for the time period of up to three months.

Tourist visa (Subclass 676)

Tourist Visa (Subclass 676) is a temporary visa, which allows its holder to stay in Australia for up to 3/6/12 months. Travelers can apply for the visa from outside as well as in Australia. Some tourists are even eligible to lodge an online application for an 676 Tourist Visa.

Sponsored Family Visitor visa (Subclass 679)

This visa is applied by those travelers who have relatives residing in Australia. The holder of 679 Sponsored Family Visitor Visa can visit his/her relatives for a stay period of up to 12 months. For this travel permit the applicant needs formal sponsorship by an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Nationals from certain countries are eligible to transit through Australia without a valid visa. However, if you do not qualify for a transit without a visa, then you will need to apply for a Transit Visa.

Working Holiday Visa

The Working Holiday and Work and Holiday Visa are intentionally brought in forefront by the Australian government to encourage cultural exchange and closer ties between arrangement nations, so as to encourage enthusiastic travelers to enjoy their extended holidays in Australia and supplement their expenses by indulging into short term employment.
There are two types of Working Holiday visas:

Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417)
People from Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and United Kingdom can apply for this category of visa.

Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462)
Applicants from Bangladesh, Chile, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey and the USA can apply for this category of visa.

Student Visa

TStudents looking forward to Study in Australia must apply for a valid Student Visa to descend to Australia. Parents, relatives or guardians of a student can also apply for this Visa and pay a visit to him/her while he/she is studying in Australia.

There are a total of eight sub-classes of student visas, which vary from country to country and the course of study the student chooses for.

Foreign Nationals looking forward to come to Australia through a professional development program or to undergo workplace based training can also apply for a Sponsored Training visa.

Electronic Travel Authority

Electronic Travel Authority or ETA is a secure online application process, which is developed to strengthen the security of travel to Australia. It must be applied prior to the travel date of the traveler. ETA is a short term stay visa issued for those travelers who want to descend to Australia for tourism or business purposes.

Only ETA eligible nationals can apply for an ETA.

Eligibility:

To apply for an ETA to Australia you must be a national of one of the following countries:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom (excluding British Overseas Nationals), USA, Vatican City State.

All applicants of ETA must produce health and character requirements.

Holder of this visa is entitled to make multiple visits to Australia for up to 3 months (90 days). Once issued it is valid for the time period of 1 year, or until the holder's passport expiry date, whichever comes first.

If you have criminal convictions for which you were sentenced (served or not) is less than 12 months, you would still be able to obtain an ETA. But, if the you were sentenced for 12 months or more, then you must apply for your visa with your countries nearest Austrakuab Embassy.

Conditions of an ETA are:

  • ETA is a multiple visit visa, with it you can enter and exit Australia as many times as you wish during its validity period of 12 months from the date it was issued or till the time your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • The maximum time you can stay in Australian territory is three months each visit.
  • You must not involve in any paid or unpaid activities while in Australia. However, you may undertake business visitor activities.
  • Your study period must not exceed the time duration of three months.
  • You must be free from tuberculosis.
  • The traveler must not hold any criminal convictions for which you were sentenced (served or not) for 12 months or more.

Repeat visits

With ETA

Australia ETA holders can not enjoy repetitive, extended stays in Australia, thus if you are willing to stay in the territory for extended periods for tourism purpose, then you can consider applying for Visitor Visa (subclass 600) or can alternatively select a tourist visa which suits your purpose of visit.

The Requirements to apply:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months at the time of your travel.
  • A valid credit/debit card to make payment.
  • Applicant must be from outside Australia.

Family members accompanying the ETA holder during his visit to Australia must also apply for a visa or ETA. A separate ETA application must be filled for each family member. You must also apply for a different visa if children are travelling on the parent’s passport.

Business visitor activities include:

  • General business or employment enquiries.
  • If your visit is related to government-to-government purpose.
  • To investigate, negotiate, sign or review a business contract.
  • To participate in conference, seminars, trade fairs, only if you are not getting paid by the organizers.

Transit Visa

Travelers holding onwards tickets from Australia need to apply for a Transit Visa.

Who can apply?

You can apply for a Transit Visa in following cases:

  • Travelers who do not qualify to transit through Australia, and wish to transit must apply for a Transit Visa.
  • People travelling to Australia to join a vessel as a crew.

A transit visa is required even if:

  • You fly on the same aircraft, from the exact same airport where you have landed.
  • You do not leave the airport and stay in the transit lounge.

  • Photocopy of the Bio Data page and used pages of the Passport.
  • Photocopy of any pages of endorsement or name change page (if any) in the passport.
